Oxfordshire MPs' first week..
It's a new dawn, it's a new day...

Have you missed the diaries? Reminiscing about rosettes? Perhaps you might like to see what Oxfordshire MP's- new and returning- have been up to this week; the first week of a new Parliament and a new government. Some have got visibly stuck in straight away. Constituencies in alphabetical order, as always.
Banbury
New Labour MP Sean Woodcock has a new casework address. Sean.Woodcock.MP@parliament.uk
He was sworn in looking very solemn but is now glad to be home.
And with that, I am sworn in and ready to serve as Banbury's first Labour Member of Parliament. pic.twitter.com/98Rl4DdNg3

There's no place like home. pic.twitter.com/ZSlPPKKW4D
— Sean Woodcock (@SEANLWOODCOCK) July 11, 2024
Back in his constituency he hosted an event in Chipping Norton with former Home Secretary and Foreign Secretary Jack Straw and been out at a fun day organised by Banbury Town Council, as well as out litterpicking in Banbury.
Side note, Jack Straw's Lane in Oxford, which the Clarion assumed to be associated with this Rt Honorable Gentleman's service, is apparently named after a 1930's farmer who lived there.
Brilliant evening back in Chipping Norton with the one and only Jack Straw as guest speaker. pic.twitter.com/OL7I8FafEz

Bicester and Woodstock
Calum Miller will now be at Calum.Miller.MP@parliament.uk
Calum was sworn in with the rest of the Oxfordshire MPs on Wednesday.
Time to get to work. pic.twitter.com/PaUgyztq0V
— Calum Miller (@CalumMillerLD) July 8, 2024
It was my honour formally to take my place as an MP by “swearing in” today.
— Calum Miller (@CalumMillerLD) July 10, 2024
This allows me to take my seat in debates and fully represent #BicesterandWoodstock in the House of Commons. pic.twitter.com/lXmQ6wdhXm
He's not wasted any time getting cracking and has already written to the rail minister about the London Road crossing in Bicester and started to campaign on OfWat.
Today, I wrote to Rail Minister @LordPeterHendy about the London Road crossing in Bicester.
— Calum Miller (@CalumMillerLD) July 10, 2024
Over 1,400 people have signed our petition to #KeepLondonRoadOpen. I asked for a meeting to discuss its importance and secure funding.

Didcot and Wantage
Olly Glover is now at olly.glover.mp@parliament.uk
Lib Dem Olly Glover was sworn in last week. Olly’s priorities for the constituency are 'holding the government to account during the cost of living crisis, improving access to healthcare, and ensuring our schools are properly funded'
@OllyGloverLD being sworn in as an MP. Third of 5 Lib Dem MPs in Oxfordshire. pic.twitter.com/2O8Oi2tC5k
— Justin (@Euro_Justin) July 10, 2024
Perhaps unsurprisingly for a former rail transport consultant, Olly's first statement on policy that we can see concerns the railway..
This is sad news - not just for workers on the railway but for the country’s efforts to deliver on its net zero pledges. I join with those who are calling on the new government to work with Royal Mail to reverse this decision. https://t.co/EjucQqSdGf
— Olly Glover MP 🔶 (@OllyGloverLD) July 12, 2024
He tells his own story of his first week
Well what a first week!
— Olly Glover MP 🔶 (@OllyGloverLD) July 15, 2024
I got sworn in as an MP, inducted into Parliament, starting meeting my 71 (!) colleagues, had loads of training, and started planning the next steps for local campaigns on NHS capacity, tackling sewage dumping, and a new station at Grove. pic.twitter.com/f5daruXDsx
And he was interviewed on Ed Vaizey's podcast- Olly being Ed's new MP! Ed asked Olly how he was getting on in his first week, so you can hear it in his own words here.
Train enthusiasts may be interested in his tracker for his train commute from Didcot to London...
I will be summarising my experiences of rail travel between Didcot and London. (1/2)@GWRHelp @networkrailwest @PaulCliftonBBC pic.twitter.com/V95mgoUPr3

Henley and Thame
Freddie van Mierlo (casework now at freddie.vanmierlo.mp@parliament.uk) snatched a few moments post campaign and pre-Westminster to attend Henley Regatta, and used it, unsurprisingly given his party's campaiging on the issue, to talk about sewage.
Spent a few hours at the Royal Henley Regatta today with family and friends. The river looks idyllic but is teeming with pathogens. I will be making the case in parliament to clean it up. pic.twitter.com/34gUpdF37E
— Freddie van Mierlo MP 🔶 (@fivanmierlo) July 7, 2024
Seeing the Palace of Westminster with new eyes as I prepare to collect my pass and begin work. It’s hard not to be impressed by the history of this place pic.twitter.com/11ZaqOOO1Q
— Freddie van Mierlo MP🔶 (@fivanmierlo) July 8, 2024
Speaking to the Clarion van Mierlo said:
In my first week I joined my 71 Lib Dem colleagues to elect the speaker of the house, as well as take part in various onboarding and inductions. I also worked on urgent case work already coming through to my inbox, now set up and working thanks to the excellent team at the House of Commons IT. My immediate focus is to get my team up and running to serve residents of the constituency and get to work resolving issues for residents.
Oxford East
anneliese.dodds.casework@parliament.uk
After an alleged kerfuffle according to the New Statesman at the beginning of the week, Anneliese Dodds has been appointed Minister of State for Development and Minister of State for Women and Equalities and will attend Cabinet.
Anneliese Dodds MP @AnnelieseDodds has been appointed Minister of State in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office @FCDOGovUK.
— UK Prime Minister (@10DowningStreet) July 8, 2024
She has also been appointed Minister for Women and Equalities in the Department for Education @educationgovuk.
She will attend Cabinet. pic.twitter.com/0gE68T3DcW
She has started fast in both roles. Here she is talking about aid and development.
Great to speak with @WorldBank President Ajay Banga and German Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development @SvenjaSchulze68 today.
— Anneliese Dodds (@AnnelieseDodds) July 11, 2024
Together we can work towards a world free from poverty on a liveable planet.
Restoring the UK's development reputation starts now. pic.twitter.com/hjM9SApIL2
Rebuilding our development reputation. Genuine partnership with the Global South. Economic growth. Climate action. Empowering women and girls. Equality at the heart of all we do.
— Anneliese Dodds (@AnnelieseDodds) July 10, 2024
Change begins now. pic.twitter.com/qJiRVAnH5N
And here talking about violence against women and girls. As befits a longstanding senior member of Starmer's team, Dodds is on point with the 'Change' messaging we saw from her and her Labour colleagues throughout the election campaign.
From making work pay to tackling violence to breaking down barriers to opportunity, we are determined to deliver for women and girls across our country.
— Anneliese Dodds (@AnnelieseDodds) July 12, 2024
A government already working hard to put women's equality at the heart of our mission-driven agenda.
That's real change. pic.twitter.com/EG6Pp0F94f
Speaking to the Clarion the Oxford MP commented:
I am extremely grateful for the support of the people of Oxford East in returning me as their Labour & Co-operative MP.
Last week was certainly a busy first week! First, the election count at Oxford Town Hall, where yet again the elections team did an excellent job.
I then travelled in to London, where I was honoured to be asked by the Prime Minister to serve in his Cabinet as Minister for International Development as well as Minister for Women and Equalities. This means that once again, Oxford is at the heart of a Labour Government. It is a particular pleasure to be in these roles given Oxford's traditional role in the delivery of UK aid, and our pride in our diverse and vibrant city.
At the beginning of the week, I outlined my priorities: rebuilding our development reputation with genuine partnership with the Global South; promoting economic growth and climate action; and empowering women and girls in both of my ministerial roles.
I have spent my first week receiving briefings on the work of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and that of the Equality Hub, and preparing for the upcoming King's Speech.
I am proud to remain the MP for Oxford East – speaking up on behalf of local residents and communities. This work continues. On Saturday, I was out on the doorstep talking with my constituents in Marston, and supporting a local concert which involved youngsters from Oxford's twin cities.
I will continue to push for the reopening of the Cowley Branch Line to passengers, for the continuation of car manufacturing in Oxford (especially the electric mini), for climate action and for more local social and affordable homes. I will also work for the improvements to public services that we urgently need to see, with our local NHS on its knees and many local schools struggling, as well as the reductions in community policing we've seen over recent years. Above all I will press for local peoples’ voices to be heard in Parliament.
Oxford West and Abingdon
Casework at layla.moran.mp@parliament.uk
Clearly ecstatic aboqut her increased majority and the new Lib Dem MP's in Oxfordshire, Layla gave this interview to BBC Oxford, saying 'Wow, just wow.'
"Wow, just wow". @LaylaMoran on a historic win for the Lib Dems in #Oxfordshire, where she held onto her seat with an almost 15,000 vote majority.

Before Parliament even started back Moran was stuck into casework, this time about a BMW lodged in the Botley Road pedestrian tunnel.
I understand the walkway is about to reopen if it isn’t already.
— Layla Moran 🔶🕊️ (@LaylaMoran) July 7, 2024
Thanks to the staff who have done their best in this situation.
As to the cause of the disruption -this is now rightly a matter for the police. https://t.co/eptHubbyv2
On Thursday, Moran faced into a different type of Oxford Station challenge as Network Rail announced a delay to the re-opening of Oxford's Botley road due to challenges in the bridge project. We reported on this here.
Network Rail's announcement that the Oxford station project is facing more delays and Botley Rd won't re-open as planned in October is utterly disgraceful.
— Layla Moran 🔶🕊️ (@LaylaMoran) July 11, 2024
Residents have endured disruption for far too long, and I have written to the new Minister asking for an urgent meeting. pic.twitter.com/MyP6hFgIFD
Moran is the Liberal Democrats' Foreign Affairs spokesperson and wrote to the new Foreign Secretary on Palestine immediately, and also called for (again) an immediate bilateral ceasefire.
The new government's commitment to recognising Palestine is a start, but their intention to delay until further in the peace process is the wrong approach.
— Layla Moran 🔶🕊️ (@LaylaMoran) July 11, 2024
The Palestinian right to self-determination cannot come with caveats, that's why I've written to @DavidLammy today. pic.twitter.com/P28YaTrrqR
All the Lib Dem MP's appear to have watched the football together...
What happens when we get 72 MPs for the first time in a room? We watch football. C’mon England! 🏴 #SweetCaroline pic.twitter.com/4KZt3pQHtC

Witney
Last but by no means least, Charlie Maynard is another one off the blocks fast...
First day in parliament today. Head spinning. Key takeaways are 1) be a good constituency MP, and 2) don’t lose your head. pic.twitter.com/ReH4v3qU9I
— Charlie Maynard 🔶 Liberal Democrat (@cammaynard) July 8, 2024
He seems to have taken lesson 1 to heart very quickly...
I held my first surgery today. One of the conversations led to me dropping by the Witney day centre to introduce myself. I’m looking forward to learning more about the good work they do. pic.twitter.com/waEDJAxAh0
— Charlie Maynard 🔶 Liberal Democrat (@cammaynard) July 12, 2024
And he's already started to take action on his campaign promises of dealing with the issue of sewage in the Thames.
It was great catching up with @ashsmith43 and @watervole3 of @WindrushWasp this afternoon, strategising about how best to take action on Thames Water. It's shareholders and creditors who must pay up, not residents. pic.twitter.com/juB7RcnjzY

Around the country...
Oxford is of course an exporter of politicians as regular diary readers will know... here too are some snippets of politicians of Oxford past, making their way in the House of Commons.
Perran Moon, a former councillor in Banbury was elected MP for Camborne, Redruth and Hayle, and took the affirmation in Cornish.
Delighted & honoured to have been sworn in as MP but can’t disguise my disappointment that ‘for legal purposes’ I had to do the affirmation in English first and Cornish second. pic.twitter.com/2tDT9zb3zH
— Perran Moon MP 〓〓🌹 🇺🇦 (@Perran4CRH) July 10, 2024
Luke Akehurst, former (?) Oxford resident was affronted that the BBC got the name of his constituency wrong at his swearing in.. (no pictures of his dinner in the HoC tea room yet though)..
BBC got the caption wrong- it's North Durham not Durham North! pic.twitter.com/mmLc72ON4H
— Luke Akehurst (@lukeakehurst) July 10, 2024
But he has been marching with the Durham Miners Association.
The absolute highlight of an amazing first week as Labour MP for North Durham was today: invited by Sacriston Lodge of Durham Miners' Association to march with them and their beautiful banner. pic.twitter.com/5IzFdN2dhS
— Luke Akehurst (@lukeakehurst) July 13, 2024
Tom Hayes former councillor for St. Clements now represents Bournemouth.
First day at Parliament officially done ✅ pic.twitter.com/EDKh0aQrwQ
— Tom Hayes MP (@TomHayesBmouth) July 8, 2024
And is very excited to be reunited with his former city council colleague Marie Tidball....
So pleased to be elected to the same place as this one again! 😍 pic.twitter.com/j15Nx9Gr1o
— Tom Hayes MP (@TomHayesBmouth) July 8, 2024
...who now officially represents Penistone and Stockbridge....
Delighted to chat with @mattfrei and @Channel4News about my first few days as an MP so far and what my priorities will be for our communities in Penistone and Stocksbridge.
— Dr Marie Tidball MP (@MarieTidball) July 9, 2024
I’m so proud to represent my home and the place I grew up. pic.twitter.com/jzU5x7vBk7
And finally..Antonia Bance, former Oxford City councillor is now MP for Tipton Wednesbury and Coseley.
Just sworn the oath, and I am officially the MP for Tipton, Wednesbury and Coseley.
— Antonia Bance MP (@antoniabance) July 10, 2024
I will represent everyone - whether you voted for me or not.
And I will work every day for more jobs, higher wages, safer streets, fewer of our kids in poverty - and a fair deal for our towns. pic.twitter.com/BYqkFTREHx
Good luck to all of them, We're willing them on and wishing them every success. Our county (and also for our 'exported MPs', our country) depends on it.
