In 1926, in response to urban sprawl and increasing motor car traffic, a group met at Oriel College to ‘to form a Society for the preservation of Footpaths, Bridlepaths and Commons in the neighbourhood of Oxford.’ The Oxford Fieldpaths Society (OFS) was born from this meeting, and pre-dates even the national Ramblers Association.

On 11 April, the OFS will meet at Oriel College on for its centenary AGM, and to celebrate a remarkable century of protecting the right to roam and working to improve public rights of way across the county.

The Society’s legacy is etched into the landscape itself, perhaps most notably through the 65-mile d’Arcy Dalton Way. Named after a founding member who painstakingly mapped local footpaths in the 1930s, the trail stretches from Wormleighton Reservoir in the north to Wayland’s Smithy in the south.

OFS is an active steward of the county’s green arteries, and has produced maps that are used for rambling, scrutinises planning applications, and supports funding practical improvements. Recent efforts have seen stiles replaced with kissing gates – including five new gates on the d’Arcy Dalton Way and several in Old Marston – which ensures that the beauty of the Oxfordshire countryside remains accessible to everyone.

To mark their hundredth year, the Society is embarking on an ambitious 100 walks programme and is encouraging 100 new members to join their ranks. Walks are held once or twice a week, typically covering a manageable four to five miles, and offer a perfect way to discover hidden corners of the county. Membership is open to all adults, and the group is welcoming to all, whether you are a seasoned hiker or a casual stroller.

Local residents and visitors to the county who are interested in joining for the walks or becoming more involved in the local network can find full details and a schedule of upcoming strolls on the OFS website or their Facebook page.
